Jet lag

Okay, so I thought I had this whole jet lag thing kicked. I’ve barely gotten tired at all since being back from Tokyo. Except, last night I stayed up late playing Karaoke Revolution 3 and Ratchet & Clank 3. I went to bed at 3am or so.
This morning I woke up with sun blazing through the windows and my first thought was how maybe I should buy some blackout shades. But I figured what the hell, I felt a little woozy, but why not get up. The clock in the other room indicated “2:30” so I figured we must have had a blackout. Then I realized that’s what all the clocks said – even the ones with batteries. Doh!
Hm, so it was a late start to the day. I basically blew my plan of wandering down to the Ferry Building to check out the Farmers Market (it closed at 2pm). So instead I slowly woke myself up and hopped the Bart to check out San Francisco’s best burrito. Burritos are San Francisco’s comfort food, like teriyaki is to Seattle. I made the pilgrimage to La Taqueria.
The building is out of place for Mission and 25th, which is an area of San Francisco that is pretty run down and reminds me of New York City back streets. Except that most of the signs are written for a Mexican audience. So it was a pretty easy place to find. I ordered a carnitas (pork) burrito with avocado, and a cantaloupe agua fresca (basically cantaloupe-flavored juice). Okay. Daaymn! That carnitas was frickin’ great. Cruncy and flavorful, highly spiced, and the burrito wasn’t filled up with rice and other junk that was going to turn me into a bloated pig after eating it. The agua fresca was also remarkably fresh and delicious, so much tastier than the watery juices I’ve had at other taquerias. I judge this expedition to have been very worthwhile. ๐Ÿ™‚
On the way back I decided to hop down an extra Bart station and check out the pandemonium in our core of consumerism, Union Square – okay, actually I decided I needed to buy Hiromi’s second album at Virgin Megastore. But it was absolutely nuts down there at 4th and Market. So many Christmas shoppers. I suppose this is “last minute shopping”, but since I just got back from Japan it feels like I’m just getting started. Okay, actually I am just getting started. Hehehehehe. Since I was at Virgin Megastore my Pavlovian response was tweaked and I realized I must visit Citizen Cupcake, the mini version of the popular Citizen Cake.
Turns out that Citizen Cupcake isn’t just a little dessert place, which is what I thought it would be. In fact, the only real desserts they had were … umm … cupcakes. Okay, yeah, yeah, I know, I should have expected that. ๐Ÿ™‚ Anyway, I bought one of the luscious $3.50 cupcakes and took it home with me in a little baggy to have with tea. It turned out to be quite a moist little chocolatey morsel, but I’m not certain the four bites were worth $3.50. I may have to do further investigation.
This evening is Sony’s Christmas party, and … I’m going to skip it. After reading my journal entry from last year’s party (“It was fun, but it sucks to go to Christmas parties as a single!”) I’ve decided to take my friend Lydia up on her offer to go hit up a local comedy club instead. And maybe play a little Karaoke Revolution 3 before then. ๐Ÿ™‚

taqueria can cun, down at like mission & valencia on the east side of mission, is also a spectacular burrito place. their salsa seems to be fermented just a touch and has this really nice awesome zing to it as a result. their burritos are good (well, i can only speak for the veggie ones, naturally) and their horchata was really good. and the place is dirt, dirt cheap: i got a burrito, w/ chips, salsa, guacamole, and a cup of horchata for just over $5.
