Home for a Moment

I’ve been doing a lot of traveling lately, it seems like! Right now I’m home just long enough to wash and dry a load of laundry. While cooking and eating a frozen pizza. While checking email and formatting one of my hard drive partitions. Whew. Oops, format complete – so add to that, “while installing Company of Heroes“.
A couple of weeks ago I got all my parts for a new PC, and a Dell 30″ LCD (lovely). It’s taken weeks to get it all set up since I haven’t been around much, and I still don’t have it finished and fine tuned yet. So I’m lying on the floor, propped up by a pillow, with the LCD in front of me like the monolith from 2001.
Washer almost complete… getting ready to throw it all in the dryer and start re-packing. MB and I were in Los Angeles for the weekend visiting Dave, and soaking in the Santa Monica sun. It was absolutely gorgeous there. Of course, here it is raining. I shouldn’t say “of course”, it’s really the first significant rain of the fall (or maybe the second, but I missed that one as I was … somewhere). It has been beautiful here since late spring, for the most part. MB and I, and Dave and Deb, ate a lot of good food, searched for good wine at the Wine House, drank coffee, drove around, and just generally r…e…l…a…x…e…d. So nice. Dave and Deb were wonderful hosts for our sloth-like behavior… thank you thank you ๐Ÿ™‚
Come on washer… I’m pushing the clock here. I’m going to hop a plane to the east coast to visit a developer we’re working with. It’s a red-eye flight. I hate those. I can sleep on planes, but it’s that kind of “my eyes are closed but I’m really only drowsing” sleep. I love to travel, but I always have a little undercurrent of nervousness on planes. I like to sit near the window so when I feel a bump I can look out at the world and ignore it. If I’m not near a window… it sucks.
Ah, washer done. Yahoo!
I haven’t only been away for travel lately though… I’ve also been doing a lot of furniture shopping. I have a lot of the same garbage furniture I’ve had since college, and it is way past time to upgrade this stuff. So I’ve been biting the bullet, digging through stores with the helpful support of friends and loved ones, and now I’m just waiting for some pieces to show up. hallelujah. Those of you who know me well, please don’t have a heart attack. I’m okay, I swear. It’s just time for a change.
Dave and I played a bit of Gears of War over the weekend, and it was a lot of fun. It seems over-bumpmapped, and monochromatic, but I’m picking nits on a very fun experience. Now I’m going to have to go pick up a copy to play against Dave and the gang, over the Net. Fun stuff.
Company of Heroes almost done installing. Time to see what this new box can do. I love getting new hardware set up. Before it is filled with all the cruft of a zillion Windows XP device drivers and hotfixes, the system hums along at such a happy pace. After a year or so it is like a car engine that hasn’t had an oil change for too long. So sad. Maybe Vista will fix all that? One can hope.
Okay, Company of Heroes done installing. Got to play a bit before packing and heading for the airport. Bye bye!
