Solar panel tech

This is cool stuff. An EU collaboration has resulted in some low-efficiency but pliable and easy-to-produce solar cells, termed H-Alpha Solar. This is something I’ve been wondering about for awhile: traditional solar cells are so expensive to produce; what if we could make cells that were less efficient but cheap as chips to manufacture? The fact that these cells are flexible makes the technology even more interesting.
There are some guys here in Palo Alto, NanoSolar, working on the same thing.
What I’m really hoping for though is a spray-on solar surface that can be integrated into coatings like paint. I believe some folks here in the Bay area are working on that, but there are some definite challenges in getting the voltage off the surface without zapping someone. 🙂
